THE RED DOT
Vòtre Spazi Contemporanei
Piazza Alberica 5, Carrara Italy
A major exhibition of Japanese art, curated by Nicola Ricci and Federico Giannini, is hosted in the rooms of Vôtre Spazi Contemporanei: it brings together about forty works by fifteen contemporary Japanese artists. The selection includes works of sculpture and painting by historicized, mid-career and emerging artists, with the aim of providing the public with an overview of current trends in Japanese art. The artists on display are: Takako Hirai, Misaki Kawai, Ayumi Kudo, Fumitaka Kudo, Tomoko Nagao, Akiko Saheki, Yuji Sugimoto, Isao Sugiyama, Sisyu and Kenji Takahashi, alongside recognized great masters such as Kazumasa Mizokami, Maki Nakamura, Hidetoshi Nagasawa, Yoshin Ogata, Kan Yasuda. The investigation is oriented on three lines: contemporary Japanese sculpture (in particular that in marble), art linked to Japanese pop culture, and the productions of illustrators and artists more linked to tradition. The goal is to bring out the richness of a panorama that, from the Sixties-Seventies to today, has not stopped renewing itself, looking at Western productions but without ever losing the link with tradition and therefore reaching results of absolute originality. . The red of the title recalls the color of the Hinomaru, the ‘solar disk’ that stands out in the center of the flag of Japan, while the word dot, literally ‘point’ in English, is a sort of declaration of intent: to establish a point still on Japanese art of today, at a time when Japanese productions are beginning to reappear decisively on the market
